Global Issues Facing Children
Children worldwide face numerous challenges that hinder their well-being and development. Here are some impactful statistics highlighting key issues:
Child Poverty
Approximately 333 million children globally 1 in 6 live in extreme poverty, surviving on less than $2.15 a day.
Children are more than twice as likely as adults to live in extreme poverty, with 15.8% of children affected compared to 6.6% of adults. (SOURCE: www.worldbank.org)
Child Hunger
A child dies every 10 seconds from malnutrition, totalling 3 million child deaths annually due to hunger.
45% of deaths among children under age 5 are linked to hunger and hunger-related causes. (SOURCE: www.baaldan.com)
Impact of COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated existing inequalities, particularly in education. In the UK, school closures and lack of digital resources widened the achievement gap between wealthy and disadvantaged children. (SOURCE: www.theguardian.com.)
Education Inequality
59 million children of elementary school age are denied an education.
Nearly 15 million girls of primary school age will never have the opportunity to learn to read and write, compared to 10 million boys. (SOURCE: www.baaldan.com)
Climate Change
Over 1 billion children are at extremely high risk of the impacts of the climate crisis, facing threats such as water scarcity, flooding, disease exposure, and air pollution. (SOURCE: www.bridgely.org
Children with Disabilities
90% of children with disabilities in developing countries do not attend school. (SOURCE: www.bridgely.org)
These statistics underscore the urgent need for global efforts to address the multifaceted challenges facing children today.

David’s story:
“27 years ago, my wife and I had twin sons, who were born prematurely and went into special care for a period. They had fabulous support from BIBS (Babies in Buscot Support) – we always wanted to give something back to them.
So, a few years ago I walked over 600 miles around England to raise funds. I was amazed and humbled by the support that I got, all through Covid conditions and challenging times for everyone. Waiting staff in pubs and cafes gave me their tips – and I could tell what it meant to them.
In the summer of 2024, I decided I wanted to go bigger, better and bolder than England. More importantly was to tap into – and encourage – this incredible generosity, desire to help, that so many people have, and to provide a framework for them to channel it.
I have a fantastic steering group who are volunteering their time and ideas to help launch the challenge – I could not do this without them. In my discussions with potential participants from across the world, from UK to Australia and South Africa, I heard that many people want to “help others” – they just don’t know how to.
Well now they do and now they can!”

Every step brings us closer together, and changes the lives of children and young people, helping them to build a better future.
